On Resistance

Feeling resistant is something I find super interesting. It comes up for a lot of my clients and, of course, for myself. I’ve learned that it is one of the best signposts to tell us where to start exploring. Like a little figure with a red flag waving and shouting “hey! come with me!” It tells us we care.

Feeling resistant asks us not to run away, but to dig deeper. It tells us we are trying to keep something from seeing the light. Something that is true inside of us, is not being let out, for fear of rejection. And the more we push it down, the harder it pushes back, growing stronger and out of our control until we can no longer hold it down.

We often resist to feel what we feel because of its form.

It can be a negative emotion, a boundary or any of the things we have learned to not show like anger, disappointment, opinions, saying no, etc. The risk though, is that we also keep the beautiful stuff in, like a coin with two sides. One side ugly truth, one side beautiful truth.

Imagine what could happen if that beautiful idea you have, that hilarious part of you, that gentle side, were to see the light? Is it worth giving up your resistance to what you think is unworthy?

It seems obvious that no one benefits from us keeping our best parts to ourselves. Equally though, nobody is served by saying that something like anger is not allowed to exist. It is part of our human experience, and there are ways of connecting with that vital energy without causing harm or losing our shit.

Imagine again, how would you feel if all of these parts had a place in your life? How well might they work together? The fiery energy and your beautiful ideas?

Shine your inner light, even when it’s ugly

Even when it is upset

Even when it is angry

Even when it is unfinished

Even when it surprises
